Greetings from the heart of the state of Chiapas !!
I’m currently staying with Pattys parents in San Cristobal de las Casas, a beautiful little colonial town in the mountains. It has small paved streets with colorful houses and is home to many indigenous people who wear the traditional hand-embroidered Chiapas clothing.
From here I have been on trips to the neighbouring villages and sights, such as the small community of San Juan Chamula, an tiny rural village untouched by tourism and americanism, where I was lucky enough to witness a religious festivity in which the whole population was taking part. Unfortunately, taking photos was prohibited.
I also went on an organised day-trip that took me to the waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol-Ha. This being the end of the rain season, there was a great amount of water, which rather than being the intended azul (blue) was muddy brown.
The same minibus tour that took me to the waterfalls went on to the archeological site of Palenque, the ruins of a Maya civilisation surrounded by jungle. Two hours of walking around the temples and tombs in an oppressing heat made for an exausting afternoon and I slept during most of the 5 hour trip back to San Cristobal, even though the trip included over 300 speed bumps and vast portions of road ripped up by the rain season.
Pattys parents have been very nice and I’m imposing on their hospitality until thursday when I’ll be getting a bus across the border to Guatemala. My first (and probably only) stop there will be in the town of Antigua Guatemala, a few kilometers from the capital.
Enjoy the photos:
